BEAUTY | Guide To Laser Hair Removal

Recently, I posted a little insta-story on instagram showing a quick video of me getting laser hair removal on my legs. Social media is a funny thing, sometimes I share things that I think people will be interested in and they’re not, and other times I share something thinking no one will care and they REALLY do! Ha! This video was one of them. I got SO many private messages with questions that I decided to put together a blog post for everyone that is curious or considering having it done.  Thank you to everyone who inquired about my experience!

WHY I LOVE IT

Remember my photo snorkelling with the sharks? That day trip was booked by my husband late in the afternoon and we’d leave for the trip in the wee hours of the morning. Before laser hair removal, that meant I would be panicking and quickly running to shave, but instead I enjoyed a mimosa on the beach, didn’t have to shave and was ready. In fact, would you believe me if I told you I spent 3 weeks along the beaches of Belize and didn't shave at all? Yup! And that in a nutshell... is why I'm obsessed with it.

With time being so limited and there being 100 things going on, I cannot tell you how much I love having it done. If you know me in real life, we’ve probably talked about. Because I'm kinda obsessed with how freeing it is. We are big into last minute adventures, spontaneous trips, camping, etc and who has time for shaving?! Especially when you're 5'10" and it takes forever. No thanks. It’s one less thing to think about on your to-do list and one less thing to maintain.  [Cue Mel Gibsons voice from Bravehart "FREEEEEDOM!" ]

HOW MANY SESSIONS AND HOW OFTEN?

It depends on the area, but often 7-9 sessions will bring you to being 70-95% hair free. The laser only works on actively growing hair, so each session will kill off that cycle of hair growth. In roughly 4-6 weeks (for facial hair) or 10-12 weeks (body hair), it's time for your next session as you'll have a new cycle of hair growth. This is why you need to do multiple sessions to see permanent results.

WHICH AREAS IS IT BEST FOR?

Face, underarms, forearms, bikini, legs and anywhere that you have unwanted hair.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Using a state-of-the-art laser to emit highly concentrated light into hair follicles, the laser is drawn to the pigment in the follicle. The follicle absorbs the light, which prevents future hair growth and leaves the skin around the follicle unharmed.

Over a series of treatments, this process is repeated until hair growth stops completely.

DOES IT HURT?

There's mild discomfort during the treatment, and each session you go, the less hair you have and the less you feel it. It's much less painful than waxing. Certain areas that are known to be more sensitive, you'll find getting laser done there hurts more for a brief second. For the long term benefits, I wouldn't let the idea of that deter you from the freedom of having it done. If you're really sensitive, many clinics will have a numbing cream or you can take an ibuprofen prior to your treatment.

WHY IS IT BETTER THAN OTHER METHODS?

With waxing, depilatories and anything else, the results are very short lived. There's a reason this has become one of the most popular treatments over the past 10 years and that is because it's quite remarkable.

HOW TO DECIDE WHERE TO GO

Ten years ago, I went somewhere that left me with slight scarring on my leg. Not only that but after a series of treatments, I saw very little change. Be very careful where you go!!! Do your research and go for a consultation before you book anything. You want to make the most of your investment and go somewhere that has the absolute best laser technology and certified technicians so you see the best results.

I completed my treatments with Lougheed Laser in Burnaby, BC and couldn't be happier. My results are amazing and in my opinion they are the absolute best at what they do. I had Kristen as my tech and not only is she thorough and skilled, but often she had me laughing during my appointments. She made me feel comfortable and each appointment I felt like I was catching up with a friend. I had complete peace of mind knowing that I was in good hands. If you live in the Fraser Valley and are looking for a place to go, definitely visit Kristen!

TIPS:

-Start in the winter. This way you can get in a handful of sessions before summer arrives

-Do not tan. You should wait 3-6 weeks from having a tan.

-Shave the day before or morning of your appointment

-Don't wear deodorant or lotions to your appointment (for leg & underarm)

-Don’t book an appointment the week before your lady time arrives. Your skin is more sensitive at this point and it will hurt more.

-Book with the same technician each session

-Laser hair removal works best on dark hair/light skin, there are now lasers that also work well on dark hair/dark skin but it is not as effective on grey or blonde fine hair.

-Research where you go

-If you want to see results, you have to be consistent
